A new service from Mr Hudson

Relocation intelligence for LGBTQ+ Americans planning a life abroad.

The question isn't whether life could be good somewhere else, it's where. The Abroad Dossier is a personalized research report: a ranked shortlist of countries for your specific circumstances — your money, your rights, and the life you want — with every claim dated, sourced, and checked with professionals on the ground.

How we get it right

Nine countries, known completely.

Portugal, Spain, Mexico, France, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Thailand and the United Kingdom — where American moves like yours most often land, each researched to one standard: primary sources, plus practitioners in-country who answer us in writing. Visa routes and real consular practice; the tax treatment of American wealth; marriages and families at the immigration desk; healthcare, neighborhoods, renting (and, where realistic, buying). When a rule changes in one of the nine, we notice — usually the week it happens.

If your shortlist reaches beyond the nine, name the country when you start your Dossier — we'll tell you plainly what we can and can't do, and nothing is charged until you submit.

The Abroad Dossier

One report, researched for one household: yours.

The Dossier starts from a detailed questionnaire, with questions about you and your household, your passports, your work, and your lifestyle non-negotiables, and answers the question: where should we go?

Your shortlist, ranked and argued

Three countries, deep-dived to one skeleton so the comparison stays honest, including those we ruled out, and why.

The routes, as they actually work

Statutory requirements and consular practice are labeled separately, because they are not the same thing.

Designed for our community

Marriage recognition that holds at immigration, LGBTQ+ life, healthcare continuity, HIV care and prevention, and gender-affirming care included.

A twelve-month path to residency

From first document to residence permit, with the road to permanent residency mapped. Sequenced so every step provides information before you commit, and the first irreversible step clearly marked.

A 30-minute debrief

A video call with one of our team to walk you through the Dossier, if helpful.

Twelve months of updates

When something material changes in a country we recommended, you hear from us personally. The web dossier stays current while the PDF is your dated snapshot.

$495 · a personalized Dossier within five business days.
You enter your card at the end of the questionnaire and are only charged when you submit.

Research and information, not legal, tax or immigration advice. Where a question needs a licensed professional, we say so and point you to the right one.

Read one first

You know what happens when you research a move yourself: the more you read, the less sure you get. Undated guides. Rankings funded by whoever is selling the apartment. Advice nobody stands behind. We're built differently — nobody funds our research but you — and we publish the proof.

Read a complete example Dossier prepared for a married couple leaving California, one on payroll and one freelancing. It shows exactly what $495 buys: the ranking, the honest catches, the areas where professionals disagree and we say so.

The expensive mistakes in this business aren't unusual: a visa that doesn't accept your kind of income, a marriage that doesn't legally hold at the desk. The sample shows how we keep them out of your path.

Every fact in it verified the week we published it — dated, like everything we write.

Who this is for

For people choosing where the next chapter happens.

The professionals taking their careers with them

You're not done building and you don't want the move to cost you career progression. The Dossier tests your shortlist against your actual work: the visa that tolerates your kind of income, the tax residency that doesn't ambush your salary, the cities where your professions are most suited to continue.

The retirees choosing where to settle

The work is done — or nearly — and the question is where life after retiring should happen. We research what the brochures can miss: healthcare that continues (and what it truly costs), recognition where it matters most, like hospitals, inheritance, and survivor rights, and community that's actually located there, at your pace.

The planners keeping a door open

You may not choose to leave, but you want to know how you could. The Dossier is your plan B: which residence permit, what keeps it alive, what it costs, and what converts to permanence if the calculus changes. Including whether that investment visa is necessary at all.

We're the wrong partner if you want paperwork filed for you, that's counsel's job. But we know practitioners in every country we cover and will point you to the right one. Or if you want to hear it'll all be easy, Abroad can't help. Moving abroad is never easy but we can definitely help with some of the load!

How it works

The intake questionnaire — about ten minutes

Every question informs your report; nothing asked out of curiosity or to sell you something. The sensitive sections are optional and never shared. Your card is charged only when you press submit.

The research — five business days

Your household's facts, checked against our nine-country research, verified to the week the Dossier is created.

The Dossier — yours for a year

The private web report, the PDF snapshot, your 30-minute debrief, and twelve months of personal update alerts as the rules move.

Before you commit

Then go and test it — properly.

A Dossier narrows the world to a shortlist; a scouting trip proves it. This is where being part of a travel brand helps: a rehearsal of your life in a candidate city. See the neighborhoods at a Tuesday pace, the commute you'd actually have, the flight home flown once to feel its length. Wherever you are in the journey, we can design the trip: with a Dossier behind it, it tests exactly what the research says to test; without one, it's still the most honest week you'll spend with a city.

Who's behind this

Research you can check, from a brand you may already know.

Abroad is built and run inside Mr Hudson, a luxury travel brand that has served gay men and the wider LGBTQ+ community for ten years, first as a travel publication, and for the past five a luxury travel designer for clients. The same level of service delivered in our detailed trip plans, every Dossier is checked against primary sources like statutes, gazettes, official fee tables. Where law and practice diverge, we corroborate with practitioners in-country, in writing. Every claim carries its date; when professionals disagree, you're advised.

We're a married gay couple — one Dutch, the other American-born and British naturalized — living in London, with moves to Canada, Switzerland and Spain behind us. The goals, questions, and challenges in every Dossier aren't theoretical to us: we've been there, done that, and know the ups and downs firsthand. Abroad began at our own dinner table.

Read why we're uniquely able to help you in the founding essay.
